Recuerdos de la Alhambra is the queen of guitar pieces for me. This classical guitar work is one of the greatest challenges for any guitarist because the melody is played as a tremolo and at the same time a variable bass line has to be played - and all of it pretty quickly. However, this creates a wonderfully full soundscape and you have the feeling that two guitars are playing at the same time. A pleasure for every lover of Spanish guitar music.
The key is A minor, but as it should be for any proper Spanish-romantic guitar piece, there is also a grandiose middle section in major that really takes you away.
Recuerdos de la Alhambra is a composition by Francisco Tarrega
Recuerdos de la Alhambra was composed by the famous Spanish composer Francisco Tárrega in 1896. Translated, Recuerdos de la Alhambra means "Memory of the Alhambra". The Alhambra is an old fortress in the southern Spanish, Andalusian city Granada. Francisco Tárrega must have liked it very much, so that it inspired him to write this romantic guitar piece full of melancholy. You can find more information about the Alhambra here: Alhambra in Grenada.
Every guitarist has Recuerdos de la Alhambra in their program
Recuerdos de la Alhambra is of course played by all guitarists of their own name. Nobody fails to interpret this masterful guitar piece. I have put together a corresponding selection of videos from different game versions here.
First of all, of course, is to name the incomparable Narcisco Yepes, who played Recuerdos de la Alhambra in the second half of the last century and kept the memory of this masterpiece. So, this is where Narciso Yepes plays Recuerdos de la Alhambra:
The newcomer and new pop star of the guitar scene Miloš Karadaglić plays of course Recuerdos de la Alhambra:
Who would have thought? Chet Atkis tried Recuerdos de la Alhambra. That's astonishing because Chet Atkins was a country musician (he founded the so-called "Nashville sound"). The fact that he of all people warmed himself for Recuerdos de la Alhambra actually speaks in favor of this piece. Hear for yourself:
